T is for Tabletop Games

If you’ve been following this site regularly, today’s topic shouldn’t be much of a surprise at all as I write a weekly column reviewing tabletop games. I spend my weekend playing tabletop games with my husband and friends–that is, when I’m not console gaming.

Tabletop games are more than simple ways to pass the time. For me, they force me to think and strategize, to solve puzzles, and to genuinely have fun with folks I don’t see nearly often enough.

Tabletop games come in a variety of mechanic types: from deck builders and resource management, to city-building, area movement, and dice rolling. My favorites are typically deck builders, especially games like Dominion, Ascension, and Legendary. We’ve even got the Resident Evil deck building game, though we haven’t tried it yet.

Our love of deck builders began with Dominion. We actually have this wooden case to hold all of the base set and expansion cards:

Since my father is very handy with woodworking, we’ve considered getting him to make us one of these Dominion lazy-Susan’s to make playing easier. Bonus if it works with other deck builders!

I think what I enjoy most about deck builders is that every game is different. Which cards get used is randomized each time. Between that and what your opponents do, you have to change your strategy every game. It makes for one hell of a game!
