Below is my GeekGirlCon 2016 Schedule, complete with a few panels and a signing. If you’re heading to this awesome convention, stop by and say hello!
SATURDAY, OCT. 8:
10 AM – 11 AM in Korra (Level 3 Room 2)– Science Fiction Romance: Tentacles Not Required
Science fiction romance has a strong core audience, with authors like Linnea Sinclair and Angela Knight creating vivid, exciting love stories. Princess Leia, Rey, and Katniss Everdeen fire up the imaginations of readers and authors and provide strong role models for young women. We’ll define romance and science fiction as genres, and then examine what SFR is and what it is not for authors. How do we successfully blend these two genres via plot, character development, research, and imagination?
12 PM – 1 PM in Furiosa (Level 2 Room 4) — Imposter Syndrome–Are you as good as everyone believes you to be?
No matter how diverse a culture is, there’s always someone (or a few someones) who feel they are worthless. Impostor-syndrome is somewhat new in terms of discussion and treatment. Geeks have often felt on the outside of society and suffering from this only makes that worse. We want to talk about why it exists inside geekdom, and how to get help & celebrate ones diversity rather than feeling as an outcast. When submitting media for some form of publication and getting rejection letters, the need for positivity and inclusion in fandom becomes even more important to combat impostor-syndrome.
3 PM – 3:45 PM in Level 3 Tahoma — AUTHOR SIGNING
Come find me and snag a copy of a book or four with bonus autograph. Maybe I’ll even draw a cat picture.
SUNDAY, OCT. 9:
12 PM – 1 PM in Storm (Level 3 Room 5)– Loving What You Want
Women play Halo. Boys love My Little Pony. Everyone loves Rey from Star Wars VII. And why not? How do we break down the antiquated rules for gendered fandoms? How do we welcome outsiders into the fold? How do we respectfully join a fandom that’s “not for us?” Join us as we discuss how to build fandoms that are more inclusive and welcoming to all.
