Memorial Day's History – RAVEN OAK

Memorial Day’s History

Normally I’d have a Monday Night Gaming post today, but between the holiday and deadlines, it’s not happening. Instead, I’m reminding folks of Memorial Day’s history.

My husband and I were at the store on Friday. While there, we were bombarded with “Memorial Day Sales!” and urged to “Buy 1 Get 1 Free!” for our “Holiday BBQ!”

We both looked at each other and sighed.

Memorial Day in the U.S. has a rich history that has nothing to do with BBQ, parties, and fireworks. It’s not the 4th of July folks, and it’s always concerned me that most of America treats it as such.

It bugs me to see Memorial Day sales because they cheapen the cost some pay when serving in our military. The day “off” from work is off for a reason.

In case you forgot the reason, here’s a reminder–

I’m not a fan of war. I think we involve ourselves in too many and forget about those who come back broken. Or those that don’t come back at all.

While I may not agree with our country’s need to wage war, no one deserves death. I’m editing today, but I won’t be throwing a party. If you chose to do so, please remember what the day is about. It’s not so much about thanking our veterans (that’s Veterans’ Day) and more about those we’ve lost.
